loss of feathers
« on: November 06, 2009, 11:45 »
My chickens are moulting but some have no tail feathers at all.  Think being pulled out by others. Have cleaned housing and sprayed chickens to stop pecking feathers but still losing feathers.  I am in the process of trying a tonic but not sure of problem. Any ideas.  Also, can I use wood shavings on floor of run to help keep it a little dryer in rainy weather.  Can obtain Cedar shavings, will that be OK.  Thanks for any help you may be able to give.

If they are moulting then they will look a state.
Do not worry.

What have you sprayed them with?

Wood shavings are fine as long as dust extracted.

I use wood shavings too and riddle them each morning to get out the yukky lumps, really quick and easy to do. Why dust free though I just use the shavings from my husbands woodwork, and had no problem with the girls sneezing, only me!

alisonwo what is riddle?

Always use dust free shavings never home made as chickens get respiratory infections very easily.  If it makes you sneeze then its gonna be affecting your chucks.  You can purchase dust free shavings from most pet stores or local feed merchants.
