Hamburg parsley...
« on: March 31, 2012, 21:34 »
So, does anyone here grow this delectable root please?

I keep wondering, and as we've made a bit of room, it might just be another crop to peer at...

I have some seed, but not grown it yet...........................
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

Grew it last year with the parsnips, but I probably wont bother again. It was a lot weaker than the parsnips and I had to resow the gaps.

The leaves were nice parsley, but how much parsley can one person eat??    The roots were vaguely parsnip like, but quite average compared to White Gem and Tender and True.
Still experimenting to find ideal parsnip variety for my site.
Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

I've grown both Growster (salsify and hamburg parsley) and I would say the hamburg parsley is more parsnipy-like than salsify.

I found it made very small roots - nowhere near the size promised by the piccy on the seed packet, and its not as strong growing and easy as the salsify which I mostly ignored and still managed to produce a decent crop  :)

Don't you find the salsify a pain to prepare   I liked the taste but couldn't be doing with all the scrubbing clean and peeling to get to the good stuff

Thanks News, that's good advice!

Oh yes, salsify is a real bind to prepare, especially as we had several squonky ones with tendrils which went in all directions!

We found the best way to prepare it, is to scrub it clean and just peel it with a spud basher, then cut it into cubes (or thin pieces), and grind it down to a slaw with a Mouli Grater.

It goes brown, but not unpleasantly so, and actually tastes delicious with a little mayo and perhaps a twinge of garlic. We also added some chestnuts sometimes, and that really did go down a treat!

In fact, I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes this year, as it is in a new plot, with no manure etc...

Ours grew well but the roots were near enough to parsnip for me not to bother again, and the leaves were a coarse version of parsley. Great fot stuffing chickens etc but not so good for garnish.

Using the space for something else this year

Thanks KC, we're coming round to thinking that way this year...
