I wonder if anybody has any ideas about this?

3 weeks ago to the day, my Collie had her hysterectomy. All was fine with the op, with some redness and weeping from the stitch wounds when the stitches came out after 10 days, so we had a course of antibiotics which lasted until last Wednesday. We went back so that they could look and all was fine and looking very good.

Just yesterday, I noticed a small red mark about the size of a 5p, right in the middle of the area. I wondered if it was some sort of hernia and OH wondered if it was "bruising coming out"  . I can easily ask the vet and they will say bring her in  , and I can easily take her in but as she is quite a nervy Collie, its a bit traumatic for all concerned. She is my first girl dog, so I have no experience of this sort of thing....

Anyone going to tell me that it is likely to disappear again in a couple of days? Or are we bound in the direction of the vet again....

a red mark is more likely to be infection again.  Feep an eye on it and if it gets any bigger go back to vets, you could ring them to ask for advice.

I agree - I would ring your vets either for advice or for some more antibiotics (perhaps it didn't heal up properley before the stitches came out. Had both of my girls done (one as an emergency when she had pyometrea) and both recovered within a couple of days  - mind you I was lucky in that my vets both did internal stitches so never had to go back to have any removed.

Thanks guys, I will most certainly keep an eye on it and see how it goes. I'm disappointed as the wound itself appeared to have healed wonderfully well and we only had a ladder/grid shaped mark of redness where the stitches had been.

Hiya,

When i had my caesarean (sp) and i know thats not the same op or the same speciese even but...
... i had a slight infection before staples were taken out which seemed to have cleared up but then after staples came out the infection came back and it looked a bit like that sounded started off in a small patch kind of over the wound but then spread.

Can never be too careful.

Vet definately.  Sounds like it could be a collection from an infection behind the wound.  Hope she is OK.

Thanks guys, I'm going to call into the vet this morning, even though it has actually shrunk and quitened down in colour.

As for Pop, she's as lively as ever  , but I know that means little in a Collie. Last year when she ripped a hole in her side on some roughly finished fence she didn't let on at all and OH found a wet area when stroking her much later in the day

Called in to the vet, accompanied by photo! The vet says it looks like a reaction to the internal (melting) stitches and has given me some more antibiotics until tomorrow when they will see her in the morning, just to be sure all is OK before the weekend  .

Clever OH's idea  . When he suggested it I reached for my phone, but he said no get a decent sized pic and went off to get his proper digital camera and then printed a couple of pics on his photo printer  . Boys and their toys  .

Well when I got home from work yesterday, she had managed to burst the thing, so we took her to the vet this morning and we were given another weeks worth of antibiotics and a collar. Vet: "I'll give you a collar", us:  . Vet: "Have you tried a collar before", us: "No" (because we know our dog  .....). "Well could you try one this time?", "OK". I was hoping to take a cute picture of her wearing the collar and post it, but she totally freaked when she had a little practice earlier  . She can't understand why the doorframes and walls are jumping out at her  . Hates me now  .
