Bargain rhubarb!!!
« on: May 16, 2012, 14:52 »
Was in Sainsbury's last night - rhubarb was half price... £1.50 for three sticks. Had to force myself not to buy some... not

Sorry, this isn't really a frugal living post as such... more a 'sarcastic' frugal living post  ::)

since one rhubarb plant would only cost around £1.50 and then produce many sticks a year for twenty years it shows why gardening makes sense

The four rhubarb plants I've put in this year have.... stuttered. I'm convinced three have just died, one is ok though.

Unless the other three burst into life later on (or next year?!)

At least they've reduced their prices since I mention it here:

I,ve picked over 40 lbs of rhubarb so far this year and have been costing it in my diary at £1.80 a pound.  Looks like i have seriously underestimated its value

At the above price I reckon we have been given about £55 worth by neighbouring plot holders this year. Ours is not yet established as the majority was moved in the autumn

The building may be derelict, but it and the grounds no doubt belong to someone, so unless you obtained permission to pick the rhubarb, this is theft which the forum cannot condone.

Unfortunately the chooks have trashed mine (not eaten it, just shredded it, probably for slugs) and when I saw some beautiful stalks in a local shop today I went to pick some up.....but it was £4.40 per kilo! Gave it a miss and hope for my own to get going now it is in a cage!

I feel wealthy.  Hope all the friends I've been happily handing out rhubarb to realise they are getting a gift worth £15-£20 (at full price!)
