Hi,advice please.
Been looking through seed catalogues for carrot seed,blimey!!didn't realise there were so many to choose from,
Can anyone recommend a certain variety,ie for taste,or do I go for a carrot fly resistant variety.Thanks.

Carrot fly resistant ones are just that - fly resistant, but not fly proof.

My favourites for flavour are the good old staples Early Nantes and Autumn King, gorwn under Enviromesh.

You will now no doubt get a list as long as your arm of other equally valid suggestions!

Can add to DD's list (just like he said!), so in addition, I recommend:

Chantenay (stumpier ones) great colour and flavour

Afghan Purple (purple with orange core) taste sublime

BUT always always always use enviromesh if you want unblemished carrots grown in the ground  :blink:

I do also always do Early Nantes. For a main crop, I am not that fussy. I vary this, as I can, but with so many seeds in a packet...

I grow the same varieties as DD ,plus a new variety each year .I would recomend making a Carrot cage first to keep out the carrot fly.Mine is 6ft x4ft ,2ft high  wooden frame made of 1 1/2 in x 1in roofing battons with wondermesh around the outside fixed with staples ,the top is also wondermesh but is fixed down with velcro tape for easy acess.Totally enclosed to keep the blighters out .i have used the same cage for 3yrs now.

The coloured carrots are quite tasty but if you have a fussy family, they may not want to share your joy in these.

Like the idea of a carrot cage,I will have a go at that.

Depends on how thick the mesh is Greeters. I think others will say probably not, but this (next) year, I'll try an enclosed space with a double thickness of debris netting about 2'6" high, totally enclosing a 9' x 4' bed perimeter, but not over the top.

for 2 years now I've tried growing carrots in a tunnel of enviromesh I inherited with the plot - the problem was I'm so reluctant to take the mesh off for fear of The Fly that they got completely swamped with weeds! Am going for buckets and boxes raised off the ground this year I think...

My family loves carrots but when yellow and purple ones showed up on their plates, they were viewed with great suspicion then pushed aside
