beetroot
« on: October 08, 2010, 16:41 »
Hi all, I put some beetroot in my raised beds about 4 months ago, as they now have a profusion of wonderful leaves I thought I would pull a couple up to see  how they were doing!!

The roots are like little tiny marbles! does any one have a clue what Im doing wrong, I prepared the beds with equal amounts of bought top soil and mushroom compost.  My lettuce has done well and  so have cabbages and onlions but not the Boltardi beetroots.

Any advice is most welcome.

many thanks and happy gardening

Julie

P.s will they be okay left over winter in the hope they will eventually grow?

Did you thin them out or keep them well watered? Watering is always a problem in a raised bed.
Beetroot are bi annuals and will go to seed next year. You could always eat the leaves now.

Years ago, my dad got some mushroom compost, (everyone was raving about it at the time) and nothing grew. As if you had flicked a switch, everything wouldn't, or didn't grow at all.

Since then, I've never touched the stuff, always remember my dad saying, 'NEVER AGAIN (grumble-grumble)' !!  .

If it's any help, I put in four rows of different beetroots this year and they have all been small, hince they are still in the ground, I'm hoping they pick up before the first frost.  Not been a good year for growing in my part of the world.
Better luck next year.

Mushroom compopst is very alkaline, hence why your brassicas did well in it. Not sure if beets like it that much so is probably why they didnt bulb up.

We have very akaline soil and have had good beetrot crops so I don't think it's that. As others have said, it's more likely the strange growing season  ::)

Do beetroot have to be harvested before the frosts start? Mine have also been growing very strangely, but they've started putting on weight in the last week or two. Most are now just smaller than golfball size, so I'd like to leave them in for a bit longer if they aren't going to be damaged by the frost.

I've kept beetroot in over winter, just don't expect them to grow any more when it gets really cold.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

That would make it even more alkaline!

Whooops! Wrong way

Forgot lime goes alkaline, not acidic on the ph scale
