Allotment Prone to Blight
« on: August 01, 2009, 22:03 »
Hi all.

Only had my half plot for a couple of months and am still in the digging, clearing and working out what's what stage on my allotment. I did get one small bed started at the start with some tomatoes - but going back today some of them have blight  :( Speaking to another plotholder, he said that they get blight there every year to a greater or lesser extent - I am in Devon - so having a mild and very wet summer.

My questions - is this normal that blight comes and goes? I didn't expect it to be endemic. Also - can you do much about it, or do I just stick to early potatoes and use the back garden for tomatoes?

Blight is a fungal disease which thrives in certain humidity / temperature conditions.  It may well be that the Gulf Stream means that S.W. England has a climate which is more conducive to blight than other parts of the country.

I think you can spray with something, but I've never done so and am not familiar with the details - someone else will be along I'm sure
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
