Preserving Jars

Hi all, planning abit ahead for next year but is it worth me keeping Jam jars etc from the supermarket for preserving or should i buy "proper" ones?

Im planning ahead as im going to have lbs of fruit etc next year to Jar up and was wondering which way to go with it

Jars with the pop up buttons are specially good IMO cos you can see (and hear :D) that you have a good seal when the buttons pop down.

Certainly start stock piling jam jars and pickle jars and get all the road to pass them on to you instead of the recycle bin.

I do that and still run out of jars. Had to buy Ikea preserving jars this year for all the gherkins.

I do buy new lids for the jars tho' to be sure of a good seal.
I use recycled jars for preserves for the house and friends and family but I do use new lids. They aren't very expensive.

I get mine from Pattesons glass.

Oh hey if you're giving or planning on giving any away as gifts (filled of course lol) you could always pop a label on it that says "return for refills" or something like that. Just an idea :)
