Pruning apple tree advice
« on: March 11, 2017, 21:51 »
Hello everybody
We have an established Bramley apple tree approx 30 years old that requires pruning . Have looked elsewhere online and it appears to be a winter job.

Have I left it too late to make a start?
we also rescue rabbits and guinea pigs, grow own veg

I think you can prune any time but winter is best (or more likely late autumn) because if you prune when active growth is underway each bit you prune is likely to set off several new woody shoots. This results in more small light-weight twigs and thicker growth.

Pruning in autumn results in a cut / removed branch and no new shoots to form even more woody growth the following spring.

I have a couple of apple trees that need a trim but will be patient and leave this until the end of the growing season.

I think I have this right - a quick google look-up should help.  ;)

Thank you for the reply.

Will wait until the end of the year.  Had a look on you tube ,seems quite straight forward.

But it is winter now. (well there's still a week left) I pruned my trees last week.
Your tree is a lot older and you may need a saw.
If the buds are starting to swell, leave to the end of year.

Hi Tenhens my well established apple tree was pruned on March 1st this year. Given its size it was tackled by a tree surgeon. As I am in Hampshire and you are further north I wonder if you could still prune it before spring?

Cheers HH
Keep digging

No more pruning here on the Sussex coast.... my pear tree has buds that are up to something :) The apple trees are still sleepy but not that far behind I guess.

Time to tackle the roses for their spring trim I think.
