« on: March 30, 2010, 12:59 »
many gardening mags sing the praises of starting seeds off in section of cardboard tube [e.g toilet roll tube] then planting the whole thing when ready.any thought on this and is the tube supposed to develop white mould on the outside.appreciate any thoughts on this

I've started my parsnips off in cardboard tubes and some of them have a white fur appearing on them...

I haven't tried it myself, but I've heard on here it's good for broad beans or seedling that develop a tap root, or long root, so it's not disturbed when you plant it. The cardboard is the same principle as those biodegradeable pots I guess, it will rot away as the plant grows. The mould is fine as I saw another link on this that said it shouldn't damage the plant, you can just wipe it off.

|I make all my own pots from rolled newspaper and they work just fine. there is a link somewhere on here about paper pots that tells you how to do it, you can get a proper 'paper potter' but narrow can works just as well.

I do use the toilet rolls and just wipe the white off and plant direct. Never had a problem with it yet. I did try making the paper ones but they fell apart. I don't think Blue Peter will be calling me for a make and do session in the near future.
