Good morning Pauly,  someone will no doubt give you their selection, but I would like to say don't  push the sets into the ground (ensuring they are the right way up), this compresses the soil under them, dig a small hole. ;)

Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Morning Pauly, as Tony has said, everyone will give you their own choice of onion sets to grow, my own personal choice was Sturon & Turbo.. both decent size bulbs but also stored well. As for planting them, make sure they're pointy end up.. unlike Tony I've never had an issue with just pushing them into the soil and root balls have always been good, but I've always made sure beds are cultivated prior to planting which makes it easier for sets to be pushed in.

I always use a dibber creating a small hole to drop the onion into.
Seems to work apart from checking later if the birds have pulled any out!
Keep digging

I usually go for red baron (red onions) - you can get these cheaply from Wilco, but if you spend a bit more and get head-treated ones, they are supposedly less likely to bolt. I usually lay some fleece over mine until they have sprouted in order to stop the birds from pulling them up.

I tend to agree with what's said we always cultivate the ground well to make a good bed then add a hand full or two of growmore make a small trench like you where sowing seed then  make  a small  hole with a dibber not to deep and plant your sets covering the sets over  never had any probs doing it that way we grow Turbo and red baron sets also grow onions from seed
