Grape vine outgrowing the green house!!!
« on: July 20, 2009, 11:52 »
Hi, as the title suggests i've got a grapevine thats out growing the green house and need some options please. Its a brand new vine in that i only bought it around 5 months ago as a rootball and stick looking thing, its done very well growing very tall but is still very young and delicate.....i don't really want to run it along the roof of the green house and dare'nt plant it outside for fear of the cold....i live in Ipswich, Suffolk. I was kinda wanting to have it just live out of the pot and drape over a wheel or something similar but am not sure how to do this any advice would be very much appreciated.

I'm afraid vines are a bit like that ;)

I have a well established vine that starts about 6feet to the right of my front door, but it does grow like a triffid.  Once the grapes have set, I tend to hack it back to reasonable levels each time it blocks the path to the front door lol.

I find vines are actually pretty forgiving and very resiliant.  I cut one back in Jan which had been previously well established (by previous house owner) to within 8ins of the ground.  It has now produced some very nice new shoots in which I hope to train in a more productive way than it had grown previously.

My vines get absolutely no special treatment, and tend to grow any which way (I must get some special training wires put up eventually), and our winters often seen -5C for weeks on end, often with deep snow, and it hasn't suffered yet.

I have a vine in the greenhouse (first year) and will be training it to go across the roof (I've got my cane supports ready for this) :).  Its doing very well ::).  I don't water it and I don't feed it, and I already have a few bunches of grapes which are starting to fatten up .  Whilst in France, going round a vineyard, they said to never feed or water them.  You get better grapes that way.  If you water/feed them regularly, they put all their energy into the greenery and nothing in the fruit. :tongue2:
