Title: Strawb' runners
Post by: Kleftiwallah on June 24, 2019, 13:39
Strawberry runners, not needed at this time.

Do I cut them off,  pull them from the parent plant or just leave (will they restrict the flow of strawb's)?

Cheers,   Tony.

Strawbs need to be replaced every 3-4 years so I'd cut the runners off just after the first plantlet then peg the plantlet into a pot and it will soon root to give you more plants in the coming years. It also helps the parent plant to provide more fruit as they won't be concentrating their energy into the runners.

Can you keep doing this, I transplanted runners last year & they're growing well, but very little fruit. As for the original crop, they've produced massive amounts of foliage but no fruit. I'm wondering if they're too close together. I'll try & post a pic.

Blackpool Rocket, mine are the same.  Plenty of growth but not much fruit yet.  I'm blaming the weather because they're not any closer together than they were last year and they're only second year plants.  I'm hoping they'll come good now there's a bit of warmth in the air here.

Re the runners: I'm a lazy girl about them.  I leave them on, let them root where they land and cut them off and use them to fill spaces or replace older ones.

Let's try this again shall we?  As I said, I do not need the runners, what's the best way to remove them from the parent plant?

Cheers,  Tony.

Cut them off close to the parents plant. trying to tear them off damages the crown of the plant  :D
