Title: what do I do with poultry shield?
Post by: maggiem on June 08, 2009, 16:17
Hi Please excuse what is probably a very daft question. We are quite new to chicken keeping and i'm not really sure how to use poultry shield. Do I wash down everything first ie. perches etc then spray with poultry shield solution and leave to dry or do I wash with p. shield and then rinse off? Sorry for sounding a bit dim

Have you ever heard of search engine called Google its great for searching for information.
I searched for these words poultry, shield, website
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&num=100&newwindow=1&q=poultry+shield+website&btnG=Search&meta=

and found this at the top link

From the Biolink website the manufactures website.
http://www.biolinklimited.co.uk/rm_small_holder.html

"Use the cleaning product to eliminate red mite for your coupe."
Spray everywhere inside the coupe ensuring plenty of product penetrates all the joins. If possible loosen some of the joints in the structure to guarantee all areas are covered.

Hi Maggiem

I know what you mean, you want to be sure you are doing the right thing, we are still new too, got our chooks at Easter.

I use P. Shield and dilute it 1:10 and use a pressure pump, I spray all around but I always take the perches our first and give them a good scrub with washing up liquid to shift the mess then use the P.Shield.  We have had no problems so far (fingers crossed) but I think the trick is to make sure the nooks and crannies get a good dose.

I then put a bit of Diatom on the ends of the perches before putting them back and a light dusting in the next boxes and on the chickens.

This is my routine every other Saturday but in between I poop scoop daily and change sawdust/hay weekly.

Hope this helps!

But don't rinse the poultryshield off or it won't kill any mites ;)

I spread vaseline on the perch ends, suffocates any mites trying to get out of the cracks and any others can't get in.

Paraffin works too, so does a blowtorch!!!

Thanks for all of your helpful replies. I seem to be doing much the same as everyone else  it's just that the instructions were not very clear on the container.  We have one mother hen,and her 5 x15 week old rather large chicks now and another 7 which are 10 weeks old now. We are looking forward to when some of the others are old enough to give us eggs. At the moment we have one egg a day from Mrs. Hen. Very nice it is too. Once again thanks a lot Maggie
