harvesting sprouts?
« on: November 10, 2013, 16:32 »
I have 7 or 8 sprout plants all doing ok.  Some of the sprouts on each plant are of a good size.  My question is can I just harvest a few of the larger sprouts from each plant (and the few blown ones) or are you supposed to cut the whole plant down and use the lot from each plant?
thanks x

No need to cut the whole plant. Use what you like, when you like, and don't forget that you can also eat the cabbage like growth at the top.

:)Thanks ghost61 that is very good news.  And I won't forget to eat the tops :)  Although I presume I eat these once the whole plant has been harvested - or can I cut the top of before it has finished growing?

I think if you cut the top now, there is a chance that it will sprout again. Depends on the winter ahead. You're very lucky as my sprouts were infested with whitefly and so look horrible.....

The good things about growing your own sprouts are that they are not all ready at once, and of course that tasty top too, which you can cut whenever you choose too  :D :D

If is does grow again, you can cut this new bit too  :D

Mine look ready- but is it better to leave them until a frost or do they go over? Hubby is the only person who eats them.  He needs to start working his way through them soon....... :D

Start using them from the bottom up ;)

Every year I make the same mistake - I forget that sprouts start to mature from the ground up. When I come to harvest them the bottom half of the stem is full of overgrown/useless sprouts. I'll put a large signboard up now for next year to remind me!!!!

Think I will start harvesting mine now after reading advise.
Good to know about picking them from the bottom first too so hope none wasted!  :)
