greenhouse or plastic growhouse
« on: May 05, 2010, 17:55 »
Hello,

I'd really like a greenhouse but its a bit above my budget..does anybody have one of these plastic growhouses and if so would you reccommend them as a good and slightly cheaper substitute?

I had a plastic one for a couple of seasons and it was ok.  Not as good as a proper one though as it was prone to condensation and can be blown away in a strong wind unless well pegged down.

Have you tried Freecycle or the local ads?

Generaly they do brake or blow away if you do not tie them down properly and they do rip but you can buy replacement covers for them. Ive duck taped all the joints on mine to ensure it doesnt fall over (again). It was been up for about 3 month and fell over once, but to be fair I had just moved it ::) Anyway, the short answere would be that they are cheaper but wont last you that long.

If you want to be happy for a long time - fall in love.

If you want to be happy forever - take up gardening!

I'm sure this has been covered in previous threads but if you've got the space try to get a free or cheap greenhouse. I found a 12x8 for £50 on Gumtree or Loot, had to drive 40 miles for it and hire a van but I think it was still a bargain. Got an 8x6 on Freegle, took half a day to dismantle cos it was old and bolts were corroded but it will be fine. Both times I broke glass but got lots off Freegle so I'm fine...

Someone suggested asking around if you see an under-used greenhouse peeping out from behind someone's house - and I was thinking, why not google-earth around you neighbourhood to see where the greenhouses and then go and have a look?
