Peat - John's link about non-commercial usage...
« on: June 29, 2022, 17:52 »
John popped up a link which explained how little peat is used by gardeners like us here, and I just can't find it!

Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

It was a very well-presented piece with a rational explanation about how little peat we actually use on our allotments and gardens!

If I can find it, I will send a link.

Question: Canada produces peat, faster than any mining activities (I think that's also from information provided by John).  Is Canadian peat imported there, since it does not have the potential environmental impact that is claimed for home-grown peat?

Added later:  Mike, I tried several searches, I could not find it.  Have you tried asking John directly?

Thanks SubP!

Of course I can ask him but it was only recently published, and wondered if anyone here knew first, as the argument for keeping peat in use for the minimal quants we use was compelling!

I'll ask him Mums!

The issue is; peat gets an odd reception these days, and I think a lot of the hype could well be unfounded, and anyway, our garden thrives on old composted peat bags or pots of old Jack's Magic and similar.

We have a fantastic crop of new spuds from our diminished garden this year, primarily becuase we always recycle the last year's stuff and dig it all in.

In this day and age, discouraging potential gardeners from growing their own vegetables and flowers isn't my idea of approaching self-sufficiency, especially as there are are far too many 'green' issues to be surmounted, often in confusing 'press releases' and a bit too much publicity for my liking!

we just bought some peat based compost from B&M yesterday 100LTR bales £10.49 good stuff because you know where you can put some of that peat free cr----p right up there  if I wanted that sort of compost then why don't I go down to the sewage farm there's plenty of that compost there all i need is a close peg on my nose

the only green issues I know is when I got green hands painting the garden gate green  :D we grow to eat fresh
produce of the garden that takes time and sometimes hard work to achieve I don't need some people  trying to tell me what i should or shouldn't buy I think Growster put that reply in the right context  :)

Thanks Rowland.

I only want to get the facts, not just have to do what others tell me, it's easier that way;0)
