spring green shortage?
« on: April 17, 2013, 15:38 »
I was wondering is anyone else having trouble buying spring greens? Literally all the shops I've been to have had none for the past 2 weeks. My girls won't eat other cabbages/cauli etc, fussy little darlings....
Any tips on where to get some would be great...

I haven't had any problems buying it, although it is smaller (and Tesco seem to have hiked the price up!!)

sadly our bad and prolonged winter will have had an bad effect on many veg. The farmers have lost so many crops.

Yes I have noticed the shortage, cabbages are really small, spinach non existant, my hens are just grazing grass at the moment, maybe things will pick up later in the year

AND yes prices are way up
It's all about the journey, not the destination

I tried the smaller cabbage last night and it had much more flavour than the larger ones so maybe not all bad news.

I will have to see if the hens like the one I bought them, they might not like the stronger flavour!

I tried them with a savoy style cabbage and they were fine as long as i pulled all the leaves open, but its so expensive as they can easily eat one a day.

Mine would probably eat even more if I gave it to them, but I like the dark green cabbages, the white ones look rather ill to me and they seem to leave it a long time and just stand around looking at it

My girls love curly kale and it is all scoffed by lunch time (when they are let out to free range). They turn their beaks up now at spring greens so it is not worth giving it to them (but the rabbits still love it so it is not wasted if we don't eat it). Hang on! Did I really just say we eat what the chickens reject?! something not quite right here...!
