I think I have a Quince tree
« on: November 13, 2011, 16:28 »
Hi all,
I think that I have planted a quince tree without realising!  Photo attached.

Unfortunately, it's north facing, so it's never going to do too well, but it has have a lot of fruit this year (only about 5 or 6 last year so didn't bother trying to do anything with it).  To be honest I have kept it for its beautiful flower in spring.  Any quince in late Autumn would be a bonus.

From what i've read on other posts, it seems to be a quince, but i'd appreciate somebody elses' opinion.  If so, should I opt for jelly or wine?
Thanks!
Hywel

Unfortunately I have no idea what I have planted.  When I was planting the garden from scratch I took some shrubs from my parents garden.  I picked it because it had pretty blossom and was surprised when fruit appeard last year for the first time.  This year I would guess i have about 30 golf ball sized fruits, and don't want them to go to waste, but unfortunately as to its variety, its a mystery.

Alsagerman - sounds from te size that it's the decorative one. I've got 2 and haven't treid eating the fruit (they are quite small and there arn't that many of them)

Mumofstig - it's the edible one, Vranja that I'm planting

If the fruits are just golfball size then i also think its chaenomeles which is very pretty.

This is what they can do...  :D
I collected loads this year from various customers houses I go to... I call them Japonica Quince...  probably correct name is  japonica chaenomele... great tasting jelly.

Loads of quince and a few apples. I made various combinations..

The flowers were red.  They look very similar to Gavin's in the photo.  I think i'll just give it a go with the jelly and see what happens!
Thanks

Chaenomeles japonica has red or orange flowers :)

The fruit tree quince has flowers like lovely big apple blossom. :) But both are really nice

they are also fairly different looking fruit... the tree type is like an apple cross pear and makes a much sweeter jelly..
