broad bean in pot support question
« on: December 17, 2010, 12:16 »
I'm growing broad beans in pots in my back yard and at the minute they are growing nicely up a single bamboo cane in each pot. Is this an ok support method or is it a good idea to build a more solid frame? I'm totally new to broad beans. At the minute they are inside the greenhouse but when they start getting big I want to put them outside up against the greenhouse or a wall.

Have you got one bean per pot?

I grow broadies (Sutton) in containers with 6-10 beans per pot depending on size. Although Sutton is a dwarf variety it still needs support and i put canes round the edges with string wound round them.

If yours are overwintering beans they might be putting on too much growth in a greenhouse which could cause problems if you put them out while the wetaher is cold.
