Support for broad beans
« on: November 13, 2008, 17:24 »
Hi everyone.

I recently planted my broad bean plants out which I had grown from seed indoors.  They are growing well although don't need any support yet obviously!  I was wondering when they would though?  Is it a case of very slow growing now and a spurt in the spring?  What is the best kind of support for them once they need it?  Low like peas with string or wigwam like beans with canes?

Thanks.

I support mine with a few canes and parallel rows of string. They can get blown about in an exposed position.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Ditto previous posts. Exposed sites need canes, sheltered beans will grow unhindered. Tried 'dwarf' variety last year, but they were nowhere  near as good. Canes are better than hazel twigs. Good luck!  :D

Thanks for the advice.  Popped to the plot tonight and they are looking quite strong and sturdy, a few inches tall as you would expect.  I will put some canes in when they get taller.  Should they be wigwam style?

Mine are usually canes in a line (with string if necessary) rather than wigwam which are better suited to runner beans. Hope that helps.
