Onions in storage going soft.
« on: October 08, 2015, 18:32 »
Like most people I have picked all my onions and they are all in store,in the shed. I am not sure of the varieties but the normal onions seem to be ok, but the red onions seem to be going soft. Looking at them I will have evry few of them left by the weekend and they will go into the compost bin.
Thanks for any ideas/thoughts you might have.

Slice, chop and freeze them - double bag them to keep the smell off other food.

Yes mine are the same the outer layers are going disculoured and soft will they still be ok to us. Just a bit concerned if they are going bad whether it will affect the inside. I might fry them up into small bags to use in onion gravy and make onion Bhaji thanks

I tend to work on the basis that if it hasn't started going brown and mushy it will be fine ... !
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

My red ones went soft early last year.  So I have only grown white ones this year.  And they are all fine.  As others have said, freeze them.

Like mumofstig says, cut freeze them now... ideal for winter soups and stews, etc. and will keep frozen for well over a year.
