Drat and double drat. I dug a few barrowloads of compost/manure into the rows where I want to plant some onions, THEN read the instructions that say they don't like freshly-manured ground.
Should I abandon these rows (chosen because they had legumes in this year)? Does anyone have experience of manure vs onions?
-
dont worry .they like your ground but not the manure around thier bases. go for it .. " werks for others "
-
so.. if I rotorvator manure in now, will the ground be ok for the onions going in next year?

Contrary to some advice, we manure our beds every fall with lots of old muck. And we get whopping great big onions every time. And if the summer is drought ridden, the mucked soil seems to keep enough moisture in for the plants. We had a very dry summer this year in Ontario, never watered the onions once, and got bigguns you could hurt someone with  Even got a bumper crop of carrots to our surprise. And no, we don't find mucking makes our carrots fork; they just get rather hairy if we add too much. Maybe this is something I should mass produce and market - Trillium's Hair Tonic for balding men

Thanks everybody, I'm going to chuck the little beggars in the ground this weekend then.
And the flirting was very entertaining as well.
