Abigail's Party was an excruciating telly playin the 70s.  It's a bit like lasagne except that it's made from pancakes not pasta and they are laid flat not round in tubes.  But apart from that very similar.
Cheese makes everything better.

need a main course.  My friend is a very good vegetarian cook so it needs to be something really different and unexpected.  I don't mind how complex or expensive just as long as it is the best thing on the table.

Sorry, but going out/married to a vegetarian, has led me to believe you don't get spectacular tasting vegetarian main courses, but you could make one that visually stands out above all the rest!

This is the one we would produce for Christmas -but is it also OK for New Year?

"Christmas Wreath with Cranberries", from Rose Elliots 'Vegetarian Four Seasons' p134, rather like a leek/broccolli/cheese quiche (without pastry) cooked in a 2.5 pint ring mould (serves 6), and garnished with sprigs of flat leafed parsley, rosemary and cranberries (to make it look like a wreath).

It may not be "complex or expensive", but it could still look like the "best thing on the table".

David, that's inspired.  There were two ring moulds in my local second hand shop yesterday and for once I didn't buy them.  Going back tomorrow early to get one.  I might do both recipes, one to fill their guts and the other to provide the wow factor.  Thank you.  Might just ask for the recipe later if I can't find it on the web.

I can PM extract if rqd.

Did have some doubts if a wreath was too Christmassy for New Year, but found ('Good Living at Christmas' by Jane Asher) a (salmon) pie wreath under 'New Years Eve Supper', and thought change the filling, but keep the circular pastry pie crust decorated with pastry leaves and complete with pastry bow.

P.S. We have decided to adapt the pie format above to try making a sosmix wreath, rather than individual sosmix sausage rolls.
