Title: vegetarian gelatine?

Is there such a thing as vegetarian gelatine for jam/preserve  making?

Supercook do one - but we've found it doesn't work very well.

Thanks for that Val. The Vegetarian Society recommends Agar Agar as an alternative. Do you think this would work instead?

I've got Vegegel from one of the major supermarkets.  Haven't used it yet so can't say any more than that.

I was wondering that as well. I certainly don't use any in jams/preserves.

Agar is VERY different to gelatine.  It does not "melt in the mouth" like gelatine.

It's a standing joke in my family.
Made a dessert for big family Sunday lunch. Turned it onto a plate and it collapsed into a heap  :lol:
No, veggie gelatine does not work as well!

You can buy flavoured vege jellies, by just wholefoods i think, but they used for dessert not jam. they set really well and fast.

The setting agent for jam is pectin, which is naturally occuring in some fruit.
