Seeds
« on: February 25, 2012, 17:11 »
I know its a bit early but with all this sunshine I just sowed a few seeds, cucumbers first filled my seed tray up with the compost opened the packet, i could not believe my eye's, four yes 4 seeds, is this a record, have i been done?
The seeds was from my daughter but she brought them from a good garden centre.
It was a proper packet and with a sealed packet in side but do not reconise the supplier.
Can i name and shame them?

Hi caretaker, If they were F1 seeds then yes, this is entirely normal... though i agree, entirely crazy. Especially with something as willing to die as cucumber. (In fact, i've seen 4 seeds of Suttons cukes at about £4 ...I nearly fainted)
Please don't waste them by sowing them this early... if you want to give them a good chance at surviving then April really is time enough. If you have a heated greenhouse, then maybe mid march. They really do get going so quickly (if they don't keel over and die first)

A lot of cucumber seed only come in fours. How many did it say on the packet? I think you've only got recourse to moan if it's way off the stated contents.

For what it's worth, I think you're  very early for cucumbers.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Some F1 seeds are soooo expensive, so I wait until the end of season 50p sale.

Got 5 Black Pearl chilli seeds for 50p instead of the RRP of £3.25  :D

I opened a pack of T&M Brussels last week, the pack said 'Ave conts 40' but it only contained 24. I rang the customer care line and they said they would send me a voucher (not received it yet though).

So could be worth following it up.

I don't normally count my seeds, it was just that I was planting them in modules!!! :D :D :D

My packet of cucumber seed only has four in it, so I really don't think it's unusual.  I do get mine in the 50p end of season sale, though!

The all-female F1 cucumber seeds must be amongst the most expensive veg seeds of all, but should still state on the packet how many there are (when you are down into single figures there should be at least the minimum number stated.)

Difficult thing to prove of course, but always worth a try if you think you've been diddled (you probably won't be the only one.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I got an all female plant/seeds a couple of years back, once again only 4 seeds.
The one thing i will say though is, if you get them to fruiting size you will get more cucumbers than you can manage as they fruit very very freely.

25 seeds in the packet of Marketmore from Justseeds of ebay.  Grew them last year, very tasty and prolific.  £1.50

Never grow anything of F1.  Much prefer the original.  My squash plants last year crossed with the courgettes, but made wonderful and interesting variables, different colours and shapes and the taste was still good

I went for Burpless this year, even though I'm growing them in the tunnel, because I just couldn't bring myself to pay that much for 4 seeds :)
