Has anyone come with a remedy for white rot other than don't grow onions, leeks and garlic on your plot for the next twenty years? Would Jeyes fluid work?

Jeyes fluid is no longer allowed as a soil sterilant.

This time I shall dig out a double row to a spade depth, line it with 1" newspaper, fill the trench with rotted manure and home compost and see what happens. If it works I shall keep that trench for next year. Have a border of spring onion which will crop quickly and when pulled will reveal any presence of whit rot.
Last year I lost about a third and decided to pull the remainder prematurely.

Where it says this...

Under European legislation the active ingredients of all pesticides have to be reviewed, the cost of raising the data for the review is estimated to be £3 million - to a small company the cost is prohibitive. Therefore as from 25th July 2003, Armillatox has become 'Armillatox Soap Based Outdoor Cleaner' so taking it out of the pesticides regulations - the formulation remains the same. Armillatox is useful as a patio cleaner and for a wide range of other applications, simply phone us for more information on our unique formulation.

The forum cannot endorse the use of Jeyes or Armillatox as a soil sterilant.

peterjf  - if you read what is posted on the forums, you should know this and please desist from promoting its use.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

DD is right, peterjf.

You have been warned twice previously that its use as a soil sterilant is banned and advised that this site cannot and will not promote illegal activities.  Despite this you continue to post in contravention of moderator requests and advice.

Please do not do this again.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I believe that white rot has got into my vegetable garden from home made compost.  Perhaps at some time I threw a contaminated onion into the bin.

Too late now!  I have read that brassicas inhibit (but does not kill) white rot, so I am going to try a few onions where I have grown cabbages.

Presumably cabbages are not banned as illegal pesticides.

Jeyes and Armillatox are both quite nasty fluids, I would certainly not want to eat anything grown on land treated with it.

Thank to all for comments. think i'll follow gillie and try where the sprouts and cabbages have been. Just out of intrest when was jeyes stopped for sterilizing - my grandad used to clean his green house soil with it every year.

We're talking sterilising soil, not greenhouses & pots etc. which is still acceptable.
