Advice about Raspberry canes
« on: July 21, 2016, 12:03 »
I planted out new raspberry canes last year.  Fruit this year has been excellent quality but not as abundant as from other bushes in other years.  My question is about the amount of NEW foliage and shoots that have appeared in the last couple of months.  It is all lush and green and some has fruit appearing, I'm assuming that these are Autumn fruiting and will go on for a couple of months.... but what to do about the huge abundance of foliage?  Do I wait until Autumn, cut down and dug up canes that are crowded? or cut down to ground level now to get some light and air in?.  They are also getting tall, probably between 4 and 5ft.  Do they need tying in somehow?

They sound like summer fruiting raspberries. What variety are they?

My autumn fruited (Polka) haven't started yet (well I picked two yesterday but I don't think that counts). If you think their Autumn fruited, did you cut down the growth last winter or are you hoping for two crops (one on last year's growth and one on this year's).

Probably most of the lush foliage will be new canes which will give you next years fruit. Mine are like a jungle this year! When your old canes have finished fruiting you can cut them down, and reduce your new canes to about 6 canes per stool.
We come from the earth, we return to the earth, and in between we garden.
