Tomatoes outdoor
« on: April 02, 2012, 17:28 »
I've grown tomatoes in a greenhouse as long as I can remember but I now have the opportunity, thrown up by the shelter of my polytunnel, of growing some in open ground on the leeward side. To me it looks an ideal location. It'll get sun most of the day except for the last couple of hours of daylight when the sun's rays will be diffused by both sides of the polytunnel and it's well protected from the prevailing westerlies

I'd tried outdoor planting before but given up due to wind damage from across the Solway Firth. Can anyone recommend a variety that may do well in this location in the far northwest of England?

I have had success last year with some everyday cherry tomatoes seed bought from a supermarket I think, anyhow I ended up literally throwing them in a bed in a part of the garden that I do not tend to see much of, not that I have acres mind it is just behind 3 huge conifers in a corner tucked out of the way. Anyhow predictably I kept forgetting they were there so they only got fed once never paid them any kind of attention and amazingly they gave me a good few cherry tomatoes, I was really surprised :)

I am growing cherries again this year, sorry I again have no idea of the variety, this time I am going to do them in hanging baskets see how that works :)

I did read a good article on this site a few days ago about tomatoes and outdoors I cannot seem to find the link now though, it is on here somewhere..........
