Allotment Soup
« on: September 14, 2009, 13:40 »
Spent yesterday afternoon making my first batch of "Allotment Soup" for the winter, I am now the proud owner of 6 bottles of yummy soup.  Will make another batch next weekend, as there is yet another marrow to use up. :D

I was thinking of putting it in the Christmas Hampers, but don't know if my lot would appreciate a Jar of Soup, not the most attractive colour, but then again it is the taste that counts....

So, Julie P - just run me through the method of putting soup in jars.... Do you just cook it, heat the jars (as in Jam making) and pour the hot soup into the jars? It sounds brilliant!

A great way of padding out Christmas Hampers... just need to find jars big enough

I put anything that was ready or in store in, marrow, carrots, onion, baby turnips, potatoes, tomatoes, garlic,  splog of marmite (you either love it or hate it!), S & P, in the pressure cooker for 10 mins, blitz and put into hot jars.

I have been collecting jars from work (it amazing what other people buy in jars......) :nowink: that have been all shapes and sizes and just used them.

Think I may use the large vinigar jars for my hampers. :D

can I ask how long it keeps for in jars, do you put them in the cupboard or fridge?  I've been putting my soup into 2pint plastic milk cartons and freezing them.

Usually doesn't last that long to worry about.

As long as the button on the top of the jar is sucked down again I would say quite a while, at least a couple of months or maybe more, I think you'll be able to tell if its going or gone off it usually starts to ferment.

I keep them in them in the cupboard, if the buttons not gone down, in the frigde and use within a few of days.

I do approximately the same and freeze. Call mine back of the fridge soup but it's the same principle.  :D
