Goji Berries

Just had an offer through of a "free" Goji plant - free is in inverted commas because you still have to pay P&P - £1.99.

Anyway I did a search and saw that a couple of people were growing them last year.  How did you get on?  Are they worth growing?  I did an Internet search as well and I see they don't fruit until at least the 2nd year so I appreciate you may not have had any fruit yet.

Has anyone else actually tasted the fruit?  I've never seen it in the shops.

It does seem like a cheap offer but it would have to go in a pot as I've nowhere to put it.  It looks like it gets quite big and needs pruning to keep it in check so maybe a pot is a bad idea because while it will keep in in check it might affect its productivity.

But at £1.99 I could try an experiment.  Anyway I'm waffling so I'll shut up now.

Yes, where's this offer?

Next door was trying to get me to grow them, so I bought him a packet of dried ones from Julian Graves health shop for chrimbo.  They tasted like sweet black tea but with a currant texture.

For £1.99 I'd probably have a go.

I must admit I can't eat them anymore, I had eaten some once and then threw up (because of a stomach bug, not the berries) but since then I associate them with being sick :(

The offers a Radio Times Subscriber Offer.

I think I may have seen some in Woolworths at the same price so why I'm considering it from something through the post when I wasn't interested in the shop I don't know.  Marketing probably!  The Radio Times ones come from T&M as opposed to plants that may have been sitting in a hot shop for way too long so I would definitely prefer the RT offer even though you could pick your plant in Woolies.

I planted mine last year. One died, but the other is still alive.

Didn't have any fruit, but this year it is already getting leaves on, so will see what happens.

Will let you all know if and when I get any fruit  :D

I got some dried ones from Julian Graves this morning - yuk!   :(

I'm soaking some in water to see if they do make "a refreshing drink" - and if they taste better hydrated.  I haven't posted the order yet although I've written the cheque but I'll still send it off 'cause I've worked out where it can go where its vigour will be an asset.

Still hope they taste better fresh although I suspect if they were really delicious we'd find them in supermarkets - like blueberries (which I don't like either).
