Title: fruit and berries
Post by: Lardman on August 23, 2009, 13:10
I've never been much for fruit but I have to admit its been nice popping out to the garden picking the odd blackberry or strawberry not to mention the plums.

I thought for next year Id expand my options, I've already pinched some more strawberry runners from a friend but Im looking around for other things I can plant. I don't really want stuff that you have to process (jam, puddings and the like) just things I can pinch off the plant and graze on.

I've been looking at raspberries and blueberries - although Id rather not buy 1000s of canes. After I've remortgaged the house to buy them  ::) what else is worth adding to the list.

Depends on what you like. You could always try melons as they're strictly grazing. Grapes can be simply for the table and could fit in an arbor framework or around a shed if you have one.

Blackcurrants, gooseberries and how about tomatoes - yes they are a fruit!

Hows about cape gooseberries or physalis as they are called in Te sco.  Very easy to grow.  Start at earliest opputunity according to seed packet so they have time to ripen.  Grew mine in pots.  They do grow again the following year but this winter killed mine from last year.
I've grown these: Golden Berry Little Lanterns  about 5ft tall

and these ones: Golden berry pineapple dwarf bush

I thought the 5ft bush was more productive not just because of the bigger size.  Who like the taste of which one was more or less 50/50 they were slightly different.  Kids seem to love them, I can't stand them but many love them.  Very expensive in the supermarket.  Had to take some to work as had so many.
