Courgettes leaves gone mouldy
« on: August 23, 2018, 20:02 »
Hi,

Anybody else notice that their courgettes have gone from a nice healthy green to covered in white mildew in about a week?

Every single plant on our allotment has gone like it?

Weather?  something else?

Mostly the weather and the change in season - autumn is a bit early this year  :(
Sadly, cool night temperatures following warm dry days and dry soil conditions all lead to powdery mildew.

Agree with Mum - pretty lucky to have avoided it here so far given the weather conditions but mildew usually starts about now even in a less challenging year (hard to believe it's getting towards autumn now )
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I went away for a few days so they didnt get watered. When I returned it was to the worst sight of powdery mildew that I have seen. I have taken the badly affected leaves off, fed and watered. They are still flowering but I guess that I am not going to be inundated with courgettes  ::)

Still looking well up here - Salford - but the plant behaviour is odd. Some are ridiculously prolific whilst some varieties have dropped off.

My courgettes have done very well this year & strangely , while there are many leaves going yellow & spotted, a new growth of Green leaves is appearing & still lots of flowers & still some courgettes !! Should I remove the yellow leaves ?
Thanks

Generally speaking if it should be green and it is not there is no chlorofil and photosynthesis is not happening .
I always take the old mildewy leaves off if there are new healthy leaves to do the work.

I took the biggest leaves off my courgettes at the weekend due to powdery mildew, but nae probs, the plants have more than provided this year, and I still have a few fruiting. You can compost the affected leaves.

The cucumber planted among them is strangely unaffected...

good to note that they can be composted.

I removed most of my mildewed leaves a while ago and they have now sprung back to life with fresh lush leaves and new fruit. I was about to give up on them, but the courgette glut can continue. :D

Half my Little Gems have powdery mildew, and it is present across the site on other plotholders squash. It always arrives at some point, usually I have had it much earlier, but this summer I have avoided it, not sure whether it was the weather or I managed to space them out adequately. Once we get to the equinox and beyond, shortly followed by chilly nights, I don't expect much of summer squash, they have done their job now.
