Do I have to be cruel to be kind?
« on: April 26, 2010, 07:32 »
Hi, can I have some advise please?

I have 3 Lavender Pekin hens that are around 18months old along with a cockerill, 2 black Pekin Bantams (around 10 months old) and a millefleur the same age.

All of the hen except one black one went broody and we successfully hatched 3 chicks but the black and millefleur one attacked 2 of the chicks and we couldn't save them in time. The other chick is being cared for by one of the Lavender hens that has done mum duties previously.

2 more egss htached this weekend and althought the black and millefleur hatched them they immediately started attacking them so I moved them out of the coop and all 3 Lavender Pekins took over looking after them

My problem now is that every time all the hens go into the coop (night-time) the chicks get attacked again.

The only option I have at short notice is a rabbit hutch which I can get today to separate the chicks and keep them safe but does that mean I have to choose only one mum out of 3 to put in the hutch with them for the next 8 weeks? All 3 Lavender hens are so great with the chicks???

Thanks for any help

Idealy you need to remove the chicks and the mom you think will be best and keep them separately - good luck :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!
