« on: April 04, 2013, 20:04 »
Can anybody recomend netting that doesnt take hours to untangle ?
I bought some of the cheep stuff and ended up throwing it away....waste of money
Would it be easier to tie string between posts?

The only netting I use now use debris netting - but that's for protection, not climbing up.

There's a lot who say that once they used pea and bean netting to climbing, they'll never use it again!

Today i found out why  :) A waste of a couple of quid and time!
Think I'll try and source some wide gauge wire netting or go with your string thing, it looks like a cool solution

Chicken wire is good a little more exspensive but can be used over and over with a little care.

I'm lucky because I scrounged a 60ft wire sheep net off my Dad (who owns a farm). It's a real pain to setup because it's heavy and not very flexible but otherwise it's excellent for the job.

I also have two wide guage nylon (electric) sheep nets. These are also good strong but nets be need a lot more staking. I tend to grow the Ambassador variety peas using these nets because they're semi-leafless and don't put as much weight on the netting thus making the staking requirements easier.

You can get sheep netting of both types from flea bay or any local agricultural supplier. It's not cheap but does last years.

I use the heavy duty green netting, the kind you can use for fencing, with canes threaded through to keep it upright. The pea tangles pull off quite easily at the end of the season, but might not do for very tall plants.  I did try tying two lengths together with 8ft canes through, but it was a bit unstable.
I tried that thin pea netting last year and vowed never to do it again! ;)

Thanks People
They all sound like great idea but being in a tight budget ( no money  ) I think i will tie loads of twine between 6 foot posts ive hammered into the ground.  The idea being i can compost the whole lot at the end of the season.
Good idea?

I don't see any problem with that. After it's what DD does by looking at his photos and he is the Pea God after all.  ;)

I but pea and bean net in bulk 500 metres by 2 metres tall roll for about 60 pounds a couple of years back. I just throw it away every year and start a fresh. Not the most environmental way but no hassle and it only works out about 10p per metre. It's a big investment but it should last about 20 years.

Can't really see any plus points for netting. For shorter rows of shorter peas I still use traditional twiggy pea sticks. I think these are the nicest looking too. For the bigger rows with taller peas I use the post and string method. Can't be doing with trying to fold a lot of netting away every year, then to try and untangle it all again.

I use farmers stock wire. You can bend it to any width or shape. The 4 inch holes make it easy to pick the peas
