comfrey questions
« on: May 11, 2011, 06:46 »
hi all, i have been reading a bit on the values of comfrey, my questions are-
does it spread uncontrollably, how quick is it from planting to using,  do i have to use 1/2 my lottie plot to get enough to use in a season, is there any special variety, and where do i get it.
phew, i think that's it lol.

Hi There,

There`s a good guide to comfrey on the site. Take a look at this.

http://www.allotment-garden.org/vegetable/comfrey/index.php

I got mine off ebay from a seller called "allmypurplethings", local to me in the north east but they should travel well as they come as root cuttings. just pot them up as usuall and you should have no problems.
I can remember when it were all fields round `ere.

I bought 6 "well rooted cuttings" which arrived as "unrooted slips" ... but they are easy to grow, so that turned out not to be a problem.

I kept mine in pots the first year, and divided up as soon as they were big enough - I think about once in the first year, and then again the following Spring, which gave me about 20 plants, and then I planted out.

There was a post / poll of the percentage of the plot that people use for Comfrey. I think it was about 10% ... I'll see if I can find the thread.

Edit: This may help:

It can spread but there is a type called bocking 14 that is self sterile so does not spread seed everywhere. You let it grow then take root cuttings to propagate.

I planted some from a cutting in October last year and cropped the leaves last week to make comfrey tea.

You do not need a lot of space to get a useful amount as it grows even in shade so plant it in bits you are not using. I have a few plants running alongside my hedge in an area I would not use for growing. I need to double this by splitting the roots at the end of the season, but it would all fit into an area of about 2 foot by 12 foot.

Hi needssomehelp,

How much did you pay for your cuttings and which seller did you get them from?

What plants like a drink of Comfrey fertiliser?
Can I water the diluted mixture directly onto foliage as well as around the roots.
Thanks.

1. All of them
2. Yes, I think so, as long as it's weak enough
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
