New Zealand spinach
« on: July 26, 2015, 11:32 »
Fellow gardeners, I asked a NZ spinach question quite a while back. They are doing fine now. But as I am harvesting them from the bottom they have become top heavy and fallen on the ground. Do you think I should tie them to stakes?

By the way, I think I am here on false pretences. I see am described as an "experienced member". I am not a novice gardener but I am not sure my skills qualify me for "experienced" status!

It means experience of the forum, rather than of crop growing  ;)

I've not grown it, but see no reason why you shouldn't stake them. You could also try pruning out the middle to see if the plant makes new growth lower down.

Whenever I have grown New Zealand spinach I have just left it to do it's own thing = sprawl along the ground. It can go a LONG way!
I harvest by taking all the shoot tips with 6/8 leaves.

"I harvest by taking all the shoot tips with 6/8 leaves"

You mean you take off a whole branch? That's what I do but I start from the bottom where the longest branches are, hence the plant topples over because it is top heavy.
