Red and Blackcurrants
« on: June 06, 2010, 20:49 »
Hi
When should red and blackcurrants ripen?  I've two bushes in the garden both with loads of fruit on but they don't seem to be ripening.

If I recall, about July/August depending on where you live and if we get a lot of warm weather to help them along  ;)
Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.

Patience Beth...you have a ways to go yet.

I have plenty of both and am not looking for color for several weeks.

I got some fruit bushes from the pound shop and potted them on and they are in the garden looking very very good so far.  Will plot them next year tho i think.
Thanks
Kris

When I was a student I used to go fruit and hop-picking in Kent; blackcurrants were always the first "job" (and my least favourite; such hard work, such large boxes to fill!!).

This was mid-to late July, and although it was a long time ago I don't suppose they have evolved that much since then. Location no doubt plays a part, as it does when trying to give correct advice; please add your approximate location to your "personal profile" Beth123!  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I live in the 'Garden of England' and my red, white and black, currants are still green. With some nice warm weathar they should start to ripen around the middle of July.
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

Thank you for the advice, as you all say I just need to be a little more patience.
