Tacky handles on knives - advice please
« on: July 29, 2018, 12:04 »
I have a set of 5 Sabatier knives in a wood block.  The handles are black rubber with stainless steel on both sides.  The rubber bits (where you get the grip from) have gone tacky/sticky.  I have thoroughly washed them with good washing up liquid and dried, but it hasn't helped much.
Any help/advice what to try next ?   Thanks,  Mrs Bouquet

It sounds like something has affected the rubber. How old are they, have you put them in the dish-washer, or have they been near a source of heat? If the answer to all of these is no, I'd contact Sabatier and see if they can help because they are a very good knife-maker who may provide some further info.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I think the answer is probably yes to all those !!!  I don't want to buy new ones, because apart from the tacky handle bit they are excellent.   So expensive as well.  I thought I woud try to rub some baking powder around them - what do you think ?  Worth ago I 'spose.  Mrs B

This happened on an electric shaver I have. It seems that the plastic is just breaking down into a mush, and of course, I don't wash it in deep water.

I tried white spirit, cream cleanser and ordinary soap, and got nowhere!

It's horrible isn't it, so yes, try Sabatier!

Some of my knives (not my posh ones) went like that, I found rubbing some veg oil in and giving them a good rub/polish up afterwards, stopped the stickiness, and haven't put them in the dishwasher since, just dipped the blades in very hot water and wiped them dry. Only takes seconds and better than buying replacements.

Would WD 40 on them clean it off?

I tried that, Snows, and it didn't seem to work with me!

(I knew there was something else I'd used, but couldn't remember what it was)!

Interestingly, I have just got in from Daughter's, she has got some as well,  and hers have gone the same.  I will try oiling them next.   I think the trouble is, I cut something up, then just wash the blade, still holdng the sticky handle   Lazy Bones. AKA  Mrs Bouquet
