Next year I have the opportunity to change my layout.

I know some people like the conventional all in lines for maximum yeild plan.

Others prefer the raised beds method.

Has any one got any other designs and can recommend some reading/research.

I would like some fruit bushes , rasperries, strawberries and a long term asparagus bed that have to go into the plan. I have a 12 x 8 greenhouse and a 6 x 6 chicken run that are difficult to move but the rest is a state of flux.  The vegetable production is a hobby I dont rely on it to feed the family.  The garden at home is a football or cricket pitch so I would also like to incorporate some flowers amongst my vegetable . I may also complete the ultimate crime to some allotmenteers and have a small lawn and pond.

If you have had some good successes ie flowers that keep certain pests off vegs or flowers that put nutrients back in. Please let me know your suggestions.  Also if you have read any good articles or books on design please also let me know.

Thanks again Alan   :)

Hi Fluff,

I am going with raised beds on Dreaded Plot 13 check out my blog

www.allotment13.blogspot.com I have put my design up.

We are using 4mx1.5m beds, golden rule is on a raised bed system ensure you can reach the middle without stepping on it, the idea with raised beds is not to step on the soil, esp the no dig method. Also the path around the outside needs to be about 30-50cm so you can crouch on it..

Had a discussion today with the old hands on the allotment about the waste of growing space due to paths etc, but the theory is by not stepping on the soil and keeping the structure you get higher yields because you plant closer, and keep soil in good condition we'll see which comes out better I suppose.

I got a lot of my ideas from here:

Growing Fruit & Vegetables on a Bed System the Organic Way

Its on amazon.

Try lazy beds before you go to the trouble of cutting up bits of wood.

If you don't like the layout you can just level them and try another plan.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

:D

I think Joy Larckom's Creative Vegetable Gardening is a good read for those wanting something a bit different for their veggie growing. I borrowed a library copy and read it several times. I got my own eventually and I love dibbing into it when I need some inspiration

Go with the pond and lawn.  Allotment holder near me whose house backs on to his allotment has his whole plot as an extension of his back garden, Shrubs, seats, bird table, the whole lot.
