o dear i seem to ask questions all the time, i no your all here to help.
i have 4 new pol hens, their all eating and doing well, no eggs yet but settled in and others excepted them.
one of the new hens puts its head up straight opens its beak and seems to gulp air, closes is eyes at same time. i have felt its crop neck etc and all seems ok. have no idea, hoping someone on here has had the same problem and be able to put my mind at rest.
otherwise its very healthy.

Chooks will extend their necks and "yawn" to help move food around their crops before passing it into their tummy! But do just check for gapeworm too. Is she keeping her beak slightly open all or most of the time? Pick her up and listen to her breathing, listen out for a gurgling/rattling sound. Gapeworm live in the trachea of fowl. They can be treared quite easily but best caught early.

You can sometimes see the worms in the throat area, so get someone to hold her whilst you shine a torch down there. Apart from that, as frreebirdy says listen to her breathing etc and if all appears okay, it may be she's moving her food along. Just keep an eye to make sure that nothing is developing.
