Hatching chicks and vaccination
« on: December 14, 2010, 21:04 »
I'm considering hatching out a batch of eggs in the spring. I'm sort of getting drawn to Cream Legbars because they are available and autosexing. That aside, I'm interested in any opinions on vaccinating 'home' hatched birds as I've bought POLs from breeders in the past. My research seems to indicate that most people don't vaccinate but vaccines are available (Interhatch) albeit in 1000 dose packs. Some vaccines are injectable which is a bit of a palaver on day old chicks but not out of the question. I can't see a vet being that bothered TBH unless it's about the bill.  :) Any thoughts?

besides coming in doses of 1000 there are so many vaccines, some given at day old others at a week old etc. also some are administered via the water and others injected. Some also once opened have to be used within an hour or they don't work. They also have to be stored correctly. Being vaccinated is also not a promise of the bird remaining illness free and they can still get the illness they were vaccinated against. Plus it is often recommended not to mix vaccinated birds with unvaccinated birds (although I do have both together).
Which vaccines for which illness are you thinking about?
Staffies are softer than you think.

Well that's it - I don't know. You hear of Newcastle, Marek's, AV, IB and so on and I think I understand about disease control via vaccination but is there a rule or perceived wisdom about flock size and which diseases to immunise against?

here is a list of one companies vaccines:-

Personally for a small hobby keeper it really isn't worth the cost and as I have said if they are not administered correctly they can get the illness still. Grumpy dad from this forum bought birds that had had the Mareks vaccine - all but one of his birds sadly died including some other birds that he bought in.

It seems very much geared towards commercial use - understandable. OK, I think it's a little clearer  :) Thanks for your help.

when you do hatch chicks make sure you have a bottle of coxoid or similar in stock as they can still get coccidiosis even if your chick feed is medicated.

I agree with what Joy says, BUT if you get coxoid, don't use medicated chick feed as one can negate the other!

so along with coxoid or baycox you could do with making sure you can get your hands on some organic chick crumb  :)
