Tyres
« on: June 21, 2009, 23:25 »
Will be getting a load of tyres which will help to be a wall between the plot and the kids section as well as using them as planters. With regards to filling them up is it advisable to throw in a mixture of topsoil/compost/manure to get things started in there?

Bot of everything really, just didn't want them to be wasted when some others on the plots use them to plant stuff.

I think tyres are brilliant as planters but when we got some on our plot last year we were asked to remove them straight away by the society although a few others on the site had them and they've now made an ammendment to the site rules banning them altogther.

Our's are now sat in the back yard full of flowers so all wasn't lost.

The Soil Association intheir wisdom have declared that tyres cannot be used for organic growing.
Not sure but it may be due to plasticisers or other chemicals leaching from the tyre.
Shame really as it seems a good use for them
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

Our nursery children use them for growing spuds and other veg as they are nearly at head height for them

Good crops of first earlies too  :D
