Male Only Flowers
« on: June 21, 2009, 22:46 »
I've got 5 healthy looking gherkin plants growing in the polytunnel, the problem is there have only been 2 female flowers between all the plants, will I only have male flowers or will the female ones come a bit later on, the other question is do I have to cross pollinate and do I remoce the male flowers, hope someone can advise me

Many thanks

The plants do sometimes get a bit 'disorganised' at the beginning of the season and do all male or all female flowers, but they will sort themselves out :) For gherkins you leave all the flowers on...simples

I've got the same problem with my courgettes at the mo - they are lovely plants but no girl flowers. :( Here's hoping they sort themselves out soon!

One year I planted a packet of cucumber seeds as I needed a lot of pickling cukes. Annoyed just didn't express it enough when I found that every single cuke plant was a male. Somehow the male seeds were packaged and sold rather than kept for the seed producer. I got zero cukes that year and had to buy them by the bushel, and boy, did that cost plenty!
