Am I right to cover..
« on: May 09, 2011, 20:55 »
Am I right in assuming that my courgette, cabbage, cauliflower and sprouting broccoli plants will need covering in that fine green netting when they are planted out on the allotment?  The others on the allotment have informed me the pigeons visit constantly and we have rabbits about!

I've not seen provlems with coirgettes and I've never covered mine. The brassicas will need netting against the birds and the advantage of the fine nettingmis that it keepsmout the butterflies, too - or at least most of them.

Cheers,

Adrian

Thanks Adrian - can I use that cheap green plastic stretching netting.  My local garden centre has it for 50p a metre and it strecthes to about 2 metres wide at a guess.

Cheers
Rick

I've never known pigeons attack courgettes.

If you want to stop the cabbage white butterflies feasting on your brassicas you will need much finer mesh than that - no more than 7mm diameter holes.  If you do a search for enviromesh you'll see what I mean.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Argh Yorkie, I was dreading someone saying the green stuff was too wide guage and I would need eniromesh, it is so expensive in comparison (although cheaper than having to buy vegetables all year I suppose) LOL

Best place to buy enviromesh and will they need covering right from planting out to harvesting?

Have a look on the Bay of E for netting or enviromesh. :)  Yes cover straight away.

Why no more than 7mm Yorkie? I got my nets  from from B & Q and they are about 12mm dia holes but there's no way a cabbage white can get through.

I had 10mm mesh and they just folded their wings back and got through.  They won't get through 7mm, but it must not touch the crop as they then just shove their bums through to lay eggs. ::)
