Cold frame
« on: January 06, 2012, 09:23 »
Hi, Ive managed to scrounge an old double glazed door and frame from a neighbour with the intention of building a coldframe on my plot. I have enough bradstone blocks to build a decent structure as well. Does anyone have any advice on how i would go about this as i haven't built anything before!

First thing is decide where you want it not open sun but not shade, shelter from the wind is good.
work out the area of glass you have i.e lay it out and measure, dig a area the same size about a foot to 18" deep around the edge 6"wide dig out a further 6"and concrete footing with a dryish mix of 6 to 1 ballast and cement. Next day build up your walls making the back wall higher front wall lower and slope sides to match by cutting blocks at an angle.Line top with 2x2 treated timber to make seal for top.Fill base with 6-8"fresh manure and cover with top soil and you will have a mini hot house.
Or if just using for seed trays and pots leave out the manure.
hinge top and use a length of 2x2 for a prop for ventilation.

Double glazing cuts down the light and helpful rays twice as much as single glazing and will also cut down the heat transference.    Also, if the glass were to break, there would be squillions of tiny bits of glass to pick up, not just a few large shards as with standard glass.   I should think again.      Cheers,     Tony.
