Onions falling over
« on: January 10, 2009, 12:48 »
I sowed some onion seeds in my heated propagator 2 weeks ago.  Most of them have come up now but a lot of them are now falling over.  Will they straighten out again?  I have had them in my porch which gets a reasonable amount of sun.  Should they still remain in the propagator or come out of it?

See the image below (if I have done this right!)

At a guess, they do look leggy, even tho they are in the sun there is not a lot of daylight hours so are probably suffering from that.

hi there looks like too much heat ,

take them away from the heat , put them in cold greenhouse and they might recover , better if you started afresh , in cold greenhouse ,

also notice that you have pressed the compost around them a little too hard ,

when planting on to seperate pots , make a pencil hole in the pots,

cut off 1/2 the length of the onion plants and then water in , keeping hold of the onion until the soil is upto the 1st leaf joint ,

lastly cover with 1/2 inch dryish compost,

good luck matey

agree with too much heat. soon as the majority are through you should keep them cooler. and also make sure they are not too humid.
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.
