They are nearly ready to harvest  :D  One of the indicators is the leaves falling over

Ease them from the ground and leave them with the root plate facing the midday sun.  (Some say this stops sprouting)

Cheers,   Tony.

Til they're dry - or rain forces you to bring them inside to finish drying  ;)

If you can, dry them outside. Wire mesh supported off the ground, with a rain cover suspended over the top. They need a lot of drying.

So agree. An old man near me dries his on a fence with the bulb upwards.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Most of mine have fallen over so I pulled up the lot two days ago. Today I have to spread them out in the garage to dry while I'm away for a few days.

After lifting mine this morning, I have just had a little dig over ready to put some spring cabbage in. I was surprised at how much root has been left in by the onions. Does it need removing, or is it ok to leave it to rot down in the bed?

I just leave them to rot down with any manure or whatever I decide to add. Life is too short to pick out all the root bits  :D

As the leaves hang down, any water drains away from the neck.

Same with garlic if you must trim them early.
