You wont say that in a weeks time... I'm currently conducting a B&Q vs West+ experiment and in just 5 days in the difference is clear.  The stuff I've had looks fine but I doubt it has ANY nutrients in it at all, let alone the 5 weeks worth they claim.

I bought three bags of Homebase own brand compost this year and it was pants.  It looked like it had a little proper compost padded out with what looked like shredded cardboard boxes.  Utter rubbish.

I use Westland. 5 quid for a 100 lt bag with a high peat content etc.

Good value.

wickes compost was very good this year, again it was a peat based one

£10 for three 60 litre bags - Arthur Bowers mulit-purpose compost.

Not bad - seen better for use in seed trays but it's done the job well enough.

All this discussion has suggested to me is that the demand for compost is outstripping the decent supply. Too many people wanting to jump on the grow your own bandwagon.

The result is that all the chain stores are taking whatever comes and selling it on cheap at prices that we can afford or wish to pay.

I'm sure that there's a large market for compost based on people who have just joined the gardening world who have no knowledge at all and don't understand that their plants don't do well because of the compost they have used.

Those of us who are serious about gardening will suffer from inferior products until the mass of customers diminishes or demands better. Then the science behind the product ought to improve.

I've used several different composts this year, Westland, Arthur Bowyers and Homebase and sorry to say they were all pretty rough.  Bits of plastic, sizeable bits of wood, foil,  stones and even a piece of glass.  The actual stuff itself was coarse and fibrous, not the sort of thing for little seeds.

This is also very ture of chicken poo in pots!

A few years back very few people were using it or had even heard of it.... so it was cheap if you could find somewhere that sold it.... often 2 for the price of 1... and large tubs.

Now our local outlet has increased the price and greatly reduced the quantity... 3 for the price of 2 small carboard boxes instead of large 5 litre tubs at double to cost that it once was.

What a b*gg*r!!

I use the Wickes for everything too. Although there are the odd lumpy bits it's been fine. With some bags I get an algae bloom on the soil surface but it doesn't affect the seedlings.
