This sort of offer shows how expensive compost can be when buying in small quantities.
6X20l bags at £1 is the same as buying their 125L bale at £6. If you buy it on Wednesday with your B&Q card you get 10% off. Now that's a real deal.

I bought 12 B+Q grow bags and with my golden oldie discount it worked out at just over 4p per litre. That was the cheapest I could find after doing a search of all major suppliers. I'm not bothered about the quality as I mix it with my own home-made stuff. What you need to bear in mind is that many of the cheaper products only contain sufficient nutrients for 2 or 3 weeks so will need regular feeding even before the plants get going.

I already mentioned this on another thread, but at the moment Wyevale have a good deal on JAB compost.  If you're a Gardening Club member you get 4 X 70L bags for £12, and this also works out at just over 4p a litre. And if you're not already a member you just have to fill out a form at the till and you're an instant member.

Most retail compost contain almost no nutrients. The quick test of nutrient levels in media is to test the electrical conductivity. Random garden soil has a conductivity of 200-300. My home made fertiliser (in the compost bin) which has been brewing nicely for a year is now at 2700 - its so hot it fries seedlings. Professional growing media is about 700-900. Retail composts are about 300-400 if you are lucky. Thats why professional growers dont use retail composts and get better results.

Depends on how you look at it!! Wickes is a good hour round trip form where i live, where as b+q is a 5minute walk away!! So your talking an extra £10 in fuel to go and save 50p on a bag of compost!

Like i said! Bargain!!

..........works out at just over 4p a litre. .....

Or £40 a cubic metre. For comparison, professional composts start at that and can cost up to £90 a cubic metre, and thats loose bulk delivered.
